Position Summary

We are seeking a talented and passionate Business Data Scientist – Machine Learning to join our growing Data & Analytics team at Automattic. In this fully remote role, you will be responsible for developing and implementing machine learning models that drive business insights and optimize key performance indicators across our various products and platforms. You will work closely with product managers, engineers, and other stakeholders to identify opportunities, design experiments, and build scalable solutions that have a direct impact on our users and our business. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and deploy machine learning models to solve business problems, such as user churn prediction, fraud detection, personalized recommendations, and automated content moderation.
  • Conduct exploratory data analysis to identify trends, patterns, and insights that can inform product and business decisions.
  • Design and implement A/B tests to evaluate the impact of new features and product changes.
  • Collaborate with engineers to build and maintain scalable data pipelines and machine learning infrastructure.
  • Communicate findings and recommendations to stakeholders through clear and concise presentations and reports.
  • Stay up-to-date on the latest advancements in machine learning and data science, and apply them to solve real-world problems.
  • Participate in code reviews and contribute to the development of best practices for machine learning engineering.
  • Contribute to a collaborative and supportive team environment, sharing knowledge and mentoring junior team members.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of experience as a Data Scientist or Machine Learning Engineer.
  • Strong understanding of machine learning algorithms and techniques, including classification, regression, clustering, and deep learning.
  • Proficiency in Python and experience with machine learning libraries such as scikit-learn, TensorFlow, or PyTorch.
  • Experience with data manipulation and analysis using tools such as SQL, Pandas, and Spark.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively in a remote environment.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a passion for data-driven decision making.

Technical Requirements

As a fully remote position, you will need to meet the following technical requirements:

  • Reliable high-speed internet connection (minimum 25 Mbps download / 5 Mbps upload).
  • Dedicated home office space free from distractions.
  • Company-provided laptop and peripherals.
  • Ability to participate in video conferences and online meetings.
  • While we offer flexible working hours, some overlap with US time zones (e.g., Pacific or Eastern) may be required for team meetings and collaboration.

Desired Skills

  • Experience with cloud computing platforms such as AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure.
  • Experience with big data technologies such as Hadoop, Spark, or Kafka.
  • Experience with data visualization tools such as Tableau or Power BI.
  • Experience with A/B testing and statistical analysis.
  • Familiarity with the WordPress ecosystem or other content management systems.

Compensation & Benefits

The annual salary range for this position is $130,000 - $180,000 USD, depending on experience and location. Automattic offers a comprehensive benefits package, including:
