Key Responsibilities for Guidance Counselor:
- Provide academic, career, and personal counseling to students to support their overall well-being and success.
- Conduct individual and group counseling sessions to address students' academic concerns, career goals, and personal challenges.
- Develop and implement programs and workshops on topics such as study skills, time management, career exploration, and mental health awareness.
- Collaborate with faculty, staff, and external partners to create a supportive and inclusive campus community.
- Maintain accurate and confidential student records in compliance with privacy regulations.
- Stay current on trends and best practices in counseling and student support services.
Required Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Counseling, Psychology, Education, or a related field.
- Registration or eligibility for registration with the British Columbia Association of Clinical Counsellors (BCACC) or the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA).
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in counseling or advising students in a post-secondary educational setting.
- Strong understanding of mental health issues affecting students and knowledge of crisis intervention strategies.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
Desired Skills:
- Experience with career counseling and job search strategies.
- Knowledge of academic advising practices and student development theory.
- Familiarity with assessment tools for career exploration and personal development.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse student populations.
- Proficiency in data management and student information systems.
Compensation & Benefits:
The University of British Columbia offers a competitive salary range for Guidance Counselors, typically ranging from $60,000 to $80,000 per year, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
