Position Summary
Square is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Regulatory Data Privacy Counsel to join our Corporate Legal team. This is a fully remote position, allowing you to work from anywhere within the United States. As Regulatory Data Privacy Counsel, you will play a crucial role in advising on global data privacy laws and regulations, ensuring Square's compliance and fostering a culture of data privacy across the organization. You will work closely with cross-functional teams, including product, engineering, security, and compliance, to provide expert legal guidance and support.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide legal advice and guidance on global data privacy laws and regulations, including GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, and other emerging privacy laws.
- Develop and maintain Square's data privacy policies, procedures, and training programs.
- Conduct privacy impact assessments (PIAs) for new and existing products and services.
- Advise on data breach incident response and notification obligations.
- Negotiate and draft data processing agreements (DPAs) and other data privacy-related contracts.
- Monitor regulatory developments and industry trends in data privacy and provide updates to relevant stakeholders.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure data privacy compliance across the organization.
- Support internal audits and investigations related to data privacy.
- Participate in industry working groups and contribute to Square's thought leadership on data privacy issues.
- Work independently in a remote environment, managing your time effectively and communicating proactively.
Required Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school and membership in good standing in at least one US state bar.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience practicing law, with a focus on data privacy and regulatory compliance.
- In-depth knowledge of global data privacy laws and regulations, including GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, and other emerging privacy laws.
- Strong understanding of data privacy principles, practices, and technologies.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, remote environment.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
- Experience with data breach incident response and notification obligations.
- Must be a self-starter with the ability to thrive in a remote work setting.
Technical Requirements
As a fully remote employee, you will be responsible for maintaining a suitable home office environment. This includes:
- A dedicated workspace free from distractions.
- A reliable high-speed internet connection (minimum download speed of 25 Mbps and upload speed of 5 Mbps).
- A computer and necessary peripherals (webcam, microphone, etc.)
- Square provides a home office stipend to assist with setting up your workspace.
- Must be available for meetings and collaboration during core business hours in the Pacific Time Zone (PST/PDT).
Desired Skills
- Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP), Certified Information Privacy Manager (CIPM), or Certified Information Privacy Technologist (CIPT) certification.
- Experience working in the technology or financial services industry.
- Familiarity with data security standards and frameworks (e.g., ISO 27001, NIST).
- Experience with data privacy automation tools and technologies.
- Strong negotiation and contract drafting skills.
- Experience with virtual team collaboration tools such as Slack, Zoom, and Google Workspace.
Compensation & Benefits
The estimated annual salary range for this fully remote position is $170,000 - $250,000, depending on experience and location. Square also offers a comprehensive benefits package, including:
