Key Responsibilities for Special Education Teacher:
- Develop and implement individualized education programs for students with special needs
- Provide specialized instruction and support to students with diverse learning abilities
- Collaborate with parents, teachers, and other professionals to create a supportive learning environment
- Assess student progress and adjust teaching strategies accordingly
- Stay current on best practices in special education and incorporate them into teaching methodologies
- Participate in Individual Education Plan (IEP) meetings and contribute to student evaluations
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Special Education or related field
- Teaching certification from the Newfoundland and Labrador Ministry of Education
- Experience working with students with special needs in an educational setting
- Knowledge of inclusive teaching practices and differentiated instruction techniques
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
Desired Skills:
- Master's degree in Special Education or a related field
- Additional certifications in areas such as Autism Spectrum Disorder or Behavioral Interventions
- Experience with assistive technology and adaptive learning tools
- Knowledge of current trends and research in special education
- Fluency in French or another language is an asset
Compensation & Benefits:
The University of Alberta offers a competitive salary range for Special Education Teachers in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, with an annual salary between $60,000 to $80,000 CAD, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
