        Company Overview
Toronto District School Board (TDSB) is Canada’s largest public school board, serving over 200,000 students across the Greater Toronto Area. Recognised for its commitment to equity, inclusion and academic excellence, TDSB delivers a broad range of programs that support diverse learners, including robust English as a Second Language (ESL) services. The Board’s reputation for innovative teaching practices and collaborative culture makes it an attractive employer for educators seeking to make a meaningful impact in Canadian schools.
Key Responsibilities For ESL Instructor
- Design, deliver and assess high‑quality ESL instruction for students ranging from elementary to secondary levels, aligning lessons with the Ontario Curriculum and TDSB’s language acquisition standards.
- Conduct needs‑analysis assessments to determine individual learner proficiency, develop personalized learning plans, and monitor progress through formative and summative evaluations.
- Facilitate small‑group and whole‑class activities that promote communicative competence, cultural awareness and integration of language skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing).
- Collaborate with classroom teachers, special education staff and school counsellors to embed language support within mainstream subjects and to coordinate interdisciplinary projects.
- Maintain accurate records of attendance, assessment results and student portfolios in accordance with TDSB’s data‑management policies and provincial reporting requirements.
- Participate in professional development workshops, staff meetings and community outreach events to stay current with best practices in ESL pedagogy and to contribute to the Board’s continuous improvement initiatives.
- Provide feedback and guidance to parents and guardians regarding student progress, and recommend additional resources or interventions when necessary.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, TESL/TEFL, Applied Linguistics or a related field from a recognized Canadian university or college.
- Valid Ontario Teaching Certificate (OTC) with an ESL endorsement, or equivalent certification recognized by the Ontario College of Teachers.
- Minimum of two (2) years of full‑time ESL teaching experience in a K‑12 setting, preferably within a public school system.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the Ontario ESL curriculum, language acquisition theory and assessment tools such as the Ontario English Language Proficiency Assessment (OELPA).
- Ability to obtain and maintain a satisfactory criminal record check and vulnerable sector screening as required by provincial legislation.
Desired Skills
- Proficiency in additional languages (e.g., Mandarin, Punjabi, Arabic, Spanish) to support multilingual learners.
- Experience integrating technology‑enhanced instruction, including learning management systems (e.g., Canvas, Google Classroom) and digital language apps.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a proven ability to build rapport with students, families and multicultural communities.
- Capacity to differentiate instruction and adapt materials for learners with diverse academic, cultural and socio‑emotional needs.
- Commitment to inclusive education practices and a collaborative, team‑oriented work style.
Compensation & Benefits
- Annual salary range: $58,000 – $73,000 CAD, commensurate with qualifications, experience and applicable collective agreement scales.
- Comprehensive benefits package including health, dental and vision coverage, extended health benefits, life insurance and a pension plan under the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan.
- Paid professional development days, tuition reimbursement for further education, and access to TDSB’s internal learning resources.
- Generous vacation entitlement in line with the Ontario public sector standards (typically 9 weeks per year, including statutory holidays).
- Employee assistance program, wellness initiatives and flexible work‑life balance supports.
