Key Responsibilities For Forklift Operator - Operate sit‑down, stand‑up, and pallet jack forklifts safely and efficiently to load, unload, and relocate railcars, containers, and intermodal equipment within the Vaughan yard. - Conduct pre‑operation inspections of equipment, report any defects, and ensure compliance with CN’s safety policies and Ontario occupational health regulations. - Secure loads using appropriate restraints, verify weight distribution, and follow documented handling procedures to prevent damage to cargo or infrastructure. - Coordinate with yard supervisors, dispatchers, and other material‑handling personnel to prioritize movements and meet scheduled train departure times. - Maintain accurate records of material movements in CN’s logistics system, including scan of barcodes, completion of paperwork, and reporting of any discrepancies. - Participate in regular safety meetings, emergency response drills, and continuous improvement initiatives aimed at reducing incidents and increasing operational efficiency. - Perform routine housekeeping duties in the work area, including removal of debris, proper storage of tools, and adherence to environmental standards. Required Qualifications - Valid Ontario forklift operator certification (or equivalent) with a clean driving record. - Minimum of two (2) years of experience operating industrial forklifts in a rail, warehouse, or intermodal environment. - Ability to read and interpret work orders, shipping documents, and safety signage in English. - Physical capability to lift up to 50 kg, stand, walk, and work in varying weather conditions and noisy yard environments. - Strong understanding of Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) requirements and CN’s internal safety protocols. - High school diploma or GED; additional technical training in material handling is an asset. Desired Skills - Experience with intermodal equipment such as containers, chassis, and railcars. - Familiarity with CN’s Yard Management System (YMS) or similar logistics software. - Basic mechanical aptitude for minor equipment adjustments and troubleshooting. - Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a diverse team. - Proven track record of adhering to strict safety standards and meeting productivity targets.
